We mourn the passing of Dr. Neil Baggett, an early board member of Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe. Dr. Baggett was not only a dedicated physicist but also a tireless advocate for science, education, and the pursuit of truth.
Neil’s journey began as a country boy in Louisiana, where he spent summers on the farm and at the old swimming hole. He went on to earn a B.S. in physics and mathematics from Tulane University and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Maryland, all while working summers as a carpenter and part-time in nuclear physics at the National Bureau of Standards.
His career in high-energy physics research took him across the globe—from the United States to Germany and England—before he transitioned to leadership roles at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the Superconducting Super Collider in Texas, and the U.S. Department of Energy. At DOE, Neil helped manage the nation’s high-energy physics research program, supporting major particle accelerator facilities and university-based research. He also gave back by volunteering as a moderator for the national DOE Science Bowl competitions.
After retiring in 2007, Neil continued to give generously of his time and intellect. He joined the board of the Tesla Science Center in 2013 and served as our board secretary. A meticulous writer and clear communicator, Neil shaped early foundational documents like our strategic plan and regularly gave presentations on Nikola Tesla and the Center’s mission. He took special care in ensuring the historical and scientific accuracy of our work, believing that Tesla’s legacy could inspire a new generation of scientists and innovators.
Neil was also a board member of the Shoreham Village Association, where he organized cultural and educational programming for his neighbors. He lived quietly in Shoreham Village with his wife, enjoying community theater, horseshoes, and chess.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. Dr. Baggett’s legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the truths he pursued, and the future generations he inspired.
Rest in peace, Dr. Baggett. You will be deeply missed.
