TSCW Set to Begin Construction on Visitor Center at Historic Wardenclyffe Site This Summer
May 21, 2025

May 16, 2025 – Shoreham, New York: Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe (TSCW) is thrilled to announce that it is preparing to launch construction on the long-anticipated Eugene Sayan Visitor Center. This milestone marks a significant step in the transformation of Nikola Tesla’s last remaining laboratory into a world-class destination for science, innovation, and education.

The project includes the adaptive reuse of the 1920s Bauer House, development of a sustainable parking area, and ongoing site enhancements to improve accessibility and the visitor experience. Construction is projected to take six to eight months. The visitors center should be open to the public early in 2026.

The construction of the Visitor Center is generously funded by Suffolk County through the JumpSMART program and New York State’s Empire State Development. Their support underscores the importance of revitalizing this historic site as a drive of regional innovation, education, and economic growth.

“The Visitor Center represents the next chapter for Tesla Science Center and for the legacy of Nikola Tesla,” said Marc Alessi, Executive Director of TSCW. “It’s where we’ll be able to welcome the public, share Nikola Tesla’s story in new ways, and create dynamic programming that inspires future generations.”

The architectural concept was generously donated by Paul Cataldo Architecture & Planning PC, a member of the organization’s Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (ACE) Committee. This group of industry leaders provides pro bono expertise and strategic guidance that has been critical to the site’s revitalization. Their involvement reflects TSCW’s belief that it takes a community to build a community.

The construction of the Visitor Center opens the door for expanded programming, exhibits, and public engagement opportunities at Wardenclyffe. It also deepens the organization’s mission to honor the legacy of Nikola Tesla—the brilliant inventor behind the modern alternating current system, wireless communication, robotics, and renewable energy concepts. Though many of Nikola Tesla’s innovations laid the foundation for the technologies we rely on today, he died nearly penniless and largely forgotten. His story is one of visionary genius, humanitarian values, and scientific courage.

As construction begins, TSCW also continues vital fire recovery efforts following the November 2023 fire that damaged the historic lab building. The organization is working to raise $2.5 million this year to secure the roof and weatherproof the original laboratory, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

“We’re making exciting progress, but we haven’t forgotten the heart of Wardenclyffe—Tesla’s lab,” said Alessi. “Restoring it is essential to honoring Nikola Tesla’s legacy and completing the vision we’ve been working toward for over a decade.”
